Marion Cotillard's 'Rust and
Bone' premieres
cbsnews.com 17 May 12
'Rust and Bone,' the highly anticipated love story
starring Academy Award-winning French actress Marion
Cotillard and Belgium's Matthias Schoenaerts,
premiered Thursday at the Cannes Film Festival. But,
the film, which features poverty, bare-knuckle
fighting and a killer whale attack, divided its
first audience of journalists at the festival. "Pretty
terrible and rambling," tweeted Time Out critic Dave
Calhoun. "Enthralling and moving," said The
Guardian's Peter Bradshaw. The film's director,
Jacques Audiard, won the festival's second prize in
2009 with taut prison drama 'A Prophet'. He said 'Rust
and Bone' was his attempt to do something completely
different. Schoenaerts' character Ali is a brawny,
inarticulate single father struggling to support
himself and his 5-year-old son. Cotillard plays
Stephanie, a killer whale trainer at Marineland who
suffers a devastating accident at work. The two form
an unlikely alliance that is tested by events.

Cannes: Woody Allen's worst
nightmare
AFP 17 May 12
The red carpet glamour, the frenzied fans, the
media: Cannes is Woody Allen's worst nightmare, the
US filmmaker confides in an up-close documentary
screened at the film festival Wednesday. Allen --
whose latest film "To Rome With Love" was tipped for
a Cannes slot -- will be staying away from the event,
which runs until May 27, but the US director has
long been a fixture at the Riviera festival. Of
Allen's 40-plus films, 11 have been shown in Cannes
and five have opened the filmfest, and the
76-year-old's prolific career is in focus in a movie
by Robert Weide previewed a day before its
out-of-competition screening. "The whole thing is a
psychological nightmare -- but my wife and kids like
Cannes," the US director jokes on screen. "It has no
reality to it. You have to learn not to take it
seriously." Allen opened last year's festival with "Midnight
in Paris," which went on to become his best
performing film, grossing over 100 million dollars.

‘Moonrise Kingdom’ kicks off Cannes film festival
euronews.com 16 May 12
This year’s Cannes Film Festival has kicked off in the south
of France, opened by Bérénice Bejo, star of the multi-award
winning film The Artist. The lack of women directors among
any of the 22 films in the contest has sparked controversy.
One jury member has refuted allegations of sexism. Italian
film director Nanni Moretti is the jury’s president. The
festival began with a screening of “Moonrise Kingdom”, a
quirky American comedy by director Wes Anderson whose cast
includes Bruce Willis and Bill Murray. (Scroll down the page

Celebrity secrets of the Hotel du Cap
telegraph.co.uk 15 May 12
The Hôtel du Cap is
where Elizabeth Taylor's luggage arrived by truck
considerably in advance of Elizabeth Taylor, and where Tom
Cruise is preceded by his instructions for making salad –
accompanied with a glass of sheep's milk. It's where Lars
von Trier turned up in a camper van and Bill Cosby stood to
attention in a small launch, sailor's cap and T-shirt, and
took the salute of passing yachts. Every day, Eddie Murphy
ate a turkeyburger here, John Travolta ordered vegetable
quiches – one at 8am, another at 2am – and Kevin Costner's
cheeseburgers combined Charolais beef with Emmenthal cheese.

Cannes makes exception to show Libya
war doc rt.com
05 May 12
The 65th Cannes Film
Festival has added to its official selection a documentary
on last year’s bloody conflict in Libya. The film looking at
the events that ended the rule of Colonel Gaddafi will be
screened out of competition. Although the official selection
for this year’s film marathon on Cote d’Azur was made last
month, the festival’s organizers decided that 'The Oath of
Tobruk' by French reporter and philosopher Bernard-Henri
Levy should enter the line-up and receive a special
screening. The documentary’s creator filmed the Libyan
conflict during the whole eight months it spanned.

france24.com 19 Apr 12

in post-production when the French filmmaker died this
month, is to close the Cannes festival in May. Adapted from
the novel by the same name by French writer Francois Mauriac,
the film starring Audrey Tautou will be screened out of
competition at the close of the 65th Festival de Cannes on

Cannes film festival list dominated by European arthouse
auteurs
guardian.co.uk 19 Apr 12
A selection of heavyweight titles from top-drawer auteurs
has been unveiled for this year's Cannes film festival, with
previous winners of the Palme d'Or, Jacques Audiard, Michael
Haneke and Ken Loach, all back in contention. A competition
lineup strong on European arthouse is leavened by the
anticipated presence on the Croisette of teenybop pinups Zac
Efron and Robert Pattinson. Pattinson, the British star of
Twilight, tops the bill in David Cronenberg's Cosmopolis,
tipped as one of the key titles to screen, while Efron takes
the lead in Paperboy, the new film from Lee Daniels, one of
the few US directors on this year's slate.
Tim Roth to lead Cannes Un Certain Regard jury
bbc.co.uk 13 Apr 12
Reservoir Dogs star Tim Roth will lead a jury charged with
picking out new and emerging talent at this year's Cannes
Film Festival. The 50-year-old British actor will help pick
the winner of the Un Certain Regard prize. The award, which
runs parallel to the French festival's main award - the
Palme d'Or - is designed to recognise films with "an
original aim". The winner will be announced on 26 May 12,
the day before the Festival ends. The Un Certain Regard
panel is traditionally made up of artists, journalists and
festival directors and will be announced over the next few
days. Last year, there were prizes for Kim Ki-Duk's film
Arirang and Halt Auf Freier Strecke by Andreas Dresen.
Cannes festival left fuming by April
Fool's line-up
france24.com 04 Apr 12
A French
blog has admitted to posting a bogus line-up for next
month's Cannes Film Festival, saying it was tricked by an
April Fool's prank that left the organisers of the Riviera
showcase fuming. "It was an April Fool's stunt played by a
couple of jokers," the festival's general delegate Thierry
Fremaux, who is tasked with choosing films to compete in the
May 16-27 festival, told AFP late Tuesday. "Everything they
said is false -- simply because the line-up hasn't been
decided yet," he said, confirming that the films in the
running would be unveiled as planned at an April 19 press
conference. (See Hollywood
Reporter story below Ed.)

Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson have a date on the
French Riviera. The official lineup of films selected for
the 65th Cannes Film Festival won't be revealed until 19 Apr
12, but the Twilight stars can book their flights because
both have movies debuting at the fest, which kicks off 16
May 12. Stewart's invite comes courtesy of On the Road,
director Walter Salles' adaptation of the 1957 Jack Kerouac
novel that defined the Beat generation, while Pattinson
stars in David Cronenberg's Cosmopolis, the screen version
of Don DeLillo's novel about a fateful day in the life of a
wealthy financier. Greg

Cannes selects Marilyn Monroe for
official 65th anniversary poster
ew.com 28 Feb 12
Celebrating its 65th anniversary this year, the Cannes Film
Festival has selected Marilyn Monroe as the icon for its
2012 festival. A just-released poster for the festival shows
a glamorous Monroe blowing out a candle from a birthday
cake, a haunting image considering that this year marks the
50th anniversary of Monroe’s death in 1962. Cannes released
a statement regarding the choice: “Fifty years after her
death, Marilyn is still a major figure in world cinema, an
eternal icon, whose grace, mystery and power of seduction
remain resolutely contemporary.” The 2012 Cannes Film
Festival will run from 16-27 May 12.
