PACA region: 28 hospitals threatened with closure  laprovence.com 13 Jan 12 The Force Ouvriere (FO) union is sounding the alarm against the closure of health services and drastic cost-cutting measures "that will reinforce inequalities in access to care for the people of the PACA region". Another concern is the announced closure of 17 medical centres, primarily small local hospitals.  But the most "outrageous", according to FO, is the lack of provision for long-term care for seniors with serious illnesses. Despite the aging of the population, and the lack of existing services (3.47 beds per 1000 inhabitants over 75 years against the national average of 6 per 1000), there are no plans to expand services for the elderly. Work could start as early as next May. But the work will not be completed until 2015. The share of renewable energy should reach 25% by 2020. Since the big power outage in the winter of 2008, the specter of a further power cuts resurfaces every year with the return of wintry weather. "The risk of a blackout is not excluded, but we strive to protect the south-east from a general power failure," says Catherine Greiveldinger, regional director of RTE (Réseau de Transport d'Electricité ) in Marseille. A single 400,000 volts line feeds the region, from Avignon to Nice. The Alpes-Maritimes produces only 10% of the energy it consumes, and the neighboring Italian regions face the same supply problems. French far-right group has message in menu  AP 10 Dec 11 They feasted in the verdant back country of picture-postcard Provence, the delight of tourists and the pride of France. But it was no ordinary country idyll. The extreme right Bloc Identitaire, or Identity Bloc, was lashing out at Islam while dining on pork roast and local wine — off limits to practicing Muslims. The group, an emerging force on France's far-right scene, likens Muslim immigrants to invaders threatening the identity of the French heartland and menacing European civilization. The movement — with a wild pig as its logo — is gaining traction through its blend of Islam-bashing and romanticizing of French rural culture. Elaine Ganley.

A holiday with the jet-set at the iconic Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc  dailymail.co.uk 04 Dec 11 Luxury hotels worldwide like to notch up a Hollywood A-lister but they'd do well to avoid a name dropping contest with the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc on Cap d'Antibes. Marlene Dietrich summered here with the Kennedy clan, while Pablo Picasso and Gary Cooper set up a shooting gallery in the gardens. The Windsors, Clintons, Bushes, Mitterrands and Berlusconis have all been regulars. It seems as ubiquitous for royal and political dynasties as a sex scandal to have stayed at the Hotel du Cap. But it's not trading on past glories - no whiff of faded grandeur here... Andrea Catherwood.
