RivieraLife.tv News Review 2011

Set against a deepening economic recession, 2011 seemed to be the year when things went wrong. Even the joyous occasion of Monaco's royal wedding was overshadowed by rumours of discord. The G20 summit in Cannes was spoiled for its host, President Nicolas Sarkozy, by Greece's decision to hold a referendum on the terms of its financial aid package. A decision swiftly overturned by massive pressure from France & Germany. A spate of jewellery shop hold-ups culminated in the tragic shooting of jeweller Thierry Unik in Cannes La Bocca in November. The Arab spring saw an influx of Tunisian immigrants and the temporary closure of the border between Italy and France. Freak floods, earthquakes, light airplane and paragliding accidents deepened the sense of gloom. The local Russian community lost control of their cathedral in Nice to the Russian state after an epic battle and a local manufacturer of dodgy breast implants caused a global health scare. There was some good news of course. First we remember those from this region that passed away in 2011 before recounting month by month the most significant news events on the French Riviera in 2011.

Many of the most significant local stories were published here first, and we published many important stories overlooked by other local media. RivieraLife.tv started the year with recognition for our unique video productions on local topics by winning two awards for our short documentary 'Radio Geronimo - Monte Carlo & Bust', (Best Short Documentary Award and Best Independent Spirit Award) at the Angel Film Awards in Monaco.

Radio Geronimo - Monte Carlo & Bust

42 years ago Europe's hippest music station Radio Geronimo beamed a far-out mix of cosmic music and anarchic presentation through the Spring and Summer of 1970 via the powerful medium wave transmitter of Radio Monte Carlo. Support for anti-Vietnam war protesters and ads for the biggest cigarette papers in the world were broadcast in between music ranging from Jimi Hendrix and Albert Ayer to Buxtehude. This award winning short documentary recalls those hazy days of 1970 when it seemed that rock & roll could change the world.

Late last month, Prince Albert II, the ruler of Monaco, filed an action in a French court asking that Mr. Eringer, who once did intelligence work for the prince, be required to delete posts from his site, www.eringer33.com. The postings accuse the monarch of corrupt practices, cozying up to criminals and failing to deal with the principality's possible role in the murder of Jews by the Nazis during World War II. Prince Albert's suit calls Mr. Eringer's allegations "totally false" and asks for monetary damages and the repayment of legal costs. John R. Emshwiller & Max Colchester.

Blonde driving Bentley crashes into Ferrari, Aston Martin and Porsche in Monaco  caradvice.com.au 28 Jul 11 A woman driving a Bentley Azure in Monaco's Place du Casino last weekend managed to crash into a Mercedes-Benz S-Class, then an Aston Martin and Porsche 911, and finally stopping into a Ferrari 430. All up the cars cost around $1 million, yet the expected bill for the repairs is said to be just $60,000. Specific details of  how the crash occurred are unknown at this stage. Speed could normally be a contributing factor, but in central Monte Carlo, with so many cars and tourists gawking around at the prestigious city, it’s nigh on impossible to reach a decent speed. We’d be putting it down to lack of concentration and failure to adapt to the conditions. Brett Davis.

Grace Kelly film in the works  hollywoodreporter.com 25 Oct 11 Grace Kelly is heading to the big screen one more time. Pierre-Ange Le Pogam, the Europacorp co-founder, who recently launched his Stone Angel production and financing company, has acquired Grace of Monaco, a spec script by Arash Amel that sets Kelly's personal story amid the politics of the time. Amel's script, however, isn't a biopic and instead focuses on a six month period in 1962 when the city-state got into a heated dispute with France, which grew tired of the petite principality being a tax haven. Kelly, still relatively new in her role as princess, maneuvered behind the scenes to save Monaco from a coup. Insiders have compared the script to The King's Speech in scope and tone. Borys Kit.
