The 19th Monaco Yacht Show saw the seeds of optimism that the corner has been turned, measured with the realism that the yachting market will not revisit the excessive boom years prior to the crash. Sustainable growth and green practices may have been the buzz words this year, but for those who can still afford the ultimate in status symbols; luxury, style and design remained foremost when it came to selecting their next nautical investment. During the dinner, Xiqui Mas, Chairman of Vilanova Grand Marina – Barcelona, gave a special prize to the three finalists of the Captains Awards, Captain Ashley Benns from the Coco Loco (Best Charter Crew under 40m); Captain Don Anderson from the Newvida (Best Charter Crew over 40m) and Captain Ron Wood from Paramour (Captain of the Year for 2009).
Luxury Yachtmakers at Monaco Show Cut Prices Up to 20%  Bloomberg 26 Sep 09 Yachtmakers are slashing prices by as much as 20 percent as the recession crimps demand for luxury goods and clients curb spending on oversized vessels. Boatmakers including London-based Burgess Yachts and Italy’s Wally said visitors at the annual Monaco Yacht Show, which ends today, are seeking bargains while some customers have been forced to cancel orders as credit dries up. Roger Moore launches The J Craft Torpedo at The Monaco Yacht Show  Press Release 26 Sep 09 Esteemed Swedish boat design and manufacturing company J Craft Boats officially unveiled its new J Craft Torpedo luxury yacht tender at the prestigious Monaco Yacht Show 23 - 26 September 2009. The launch of the Torpedo sees the dawning of a new era for J Craft, with the company boosting its production on the Swedish island of Gotland in order to meet the early demand. Eight J Craft Torpedos will be ready to grace the seas in 2009 and the early part of 2010 with one boat being built each month during the rest of the year. The 12.63m J Craft Torpedo has a sprint speed of 44 knots and is powered by two Volvo Penta IPS 500 engines and transmission system which allows incredible manoeuvring sideways and through 360 degrees using a joystick. It is designed and constructed by J Craft and can sleep four passengers and one crew member.
Rina's “Green” Mega-Yachts  MGN.com 25 Sep 09 Genoa-based classification society Rina has allocated its new environmental notation Green Plus to three new mega-yachts. The 62 m yachts, MY Candyscape II and MY RoMa, built by ViareggioSuperyacht, and the 41 m MY Ocean Emerald, designed by Norman Foster and built by Cantieri Navali Rodriquez received the Rina Green Plus certificates.
Hermes Branded ‘Live On Water’ Superyacht by Wally Construct  DesignCrave.com 24 Sep 09 Put together by Monaco-based yacht maker Wally Construct and Paris-based high-fashion luxury brand Hermes, the new watercraft not only stuns with an exquisite design, it also makes for a green wave commuter. On the eve of the Monaco Yacht Show, 22 Sep 09, a select group of superyacht owners were invited to attend the Superyacht Owners Summit at the exclusive Monaco Yacht Club. A panel of experts were assembled by the sponsors Yachting Partners International and The Yacht Report Group to address and inform them on the state of the yachting industry after a tumultuous year which saw drops of up to 40% in the brokerage and charter markets. The media were not allowed in, but RivieraLife.tv obtained this exclusive summary of the event from organisers Martin Redmayne of The Yacht Report Group and Bertrand Vogéle & Mark Duncan of Yachting Partners International.

"We've gotten the strongest forward order book that we've ever had. Monaco's Wally reveals joint venture with Hermès  IBI News 23 Sep 09 Monegasque luxury yacht builder Wally has teamed up with French fashion house Hermès to create WHY, Wally Hermès Yachts, and unveil a full-size model of its first creation. The full-size model of the 'revolutionary' 58m (190ft) long, 38m (125ft) wide yacht will be presented at the operation's Ancona shipyard on Italy's Adriatic coast. Headquartered in Monaco, Wally builds motor and sailing yachts up to superyacht size.

Luxury With a Conscience  New York Times 22 Sep 09 Since Lehman Brothers sank a year ago, marinas have been awash in mothballed luxury yachts waiting for the financial tides to turn, while canceled orders have left many boat builders struggling. Yet, if plain vanilla luxury boat builders have felt buffeted, the mood at the top end of the market is very different — as reflected in the unveiling by leading luxury brands of two new yachts at the start of the Monaco Yacht Show this week. Cannes Boat & Yacht Show 2009 The Cannes Boat & Yacht Show took place 9 -14 Sep 2009. Whilst the weather was good, the yachting industry remains under an economic cloud. But there were signs of the first green shoots. Italian yacht builder Ferretti reported a 12% drop in turnover, but said it was better than the industry average. Troubled French shipyard Couach Yachts, recently taken over, used the show to relaunch & announced plans to focus on made to measure units from 30 to 50m. Fairline unveiled plans for Targo 44 Open & Gran Turismo models and yacht show partner Blancpain launched its 500 Fathoms limited series watch. Read all the news from Cannes here.

Antibes Yacht Show 2009

The 3rd annual Antibes Yacht Show (AYS) took place in Port Vauban, Antibes 2-5 April 2009. After a rainy start Friday morning, the show enjoyed fine weather and good attendance. The AYS heralds the opening of the Mediterranean yachting season. For the first time this year, the AYS has its own TV channel, 'Antibes Yacht Show Television'.
