Palais de la Méditerranée, Nice

The city Italy gave away 150 years ago remains a place apart  irishtimes.com 29 Jul 10 For many locals, the Palais de la Méditerranée is remembered above all for its link to one of France’s murkiest murder mysteries. Just three years ago, the country watched rapt as 69-year-old Jean-Maurice Agnelet was convicted for the murder of Agnès Le Roux, a young woman who vanished in 1977 while her mother was running the Palais. Agnelet, who was in a relationship with Le Roux at the time of her disappearance, was a long-time suspect, but it took 30 years of legal procedures, botched investigations and the collapse of his alibi for the case to be resolved. Le Roux’s body has never been found. Ruadhan Mac Cormaic.

Monaco signs new ten-year F1 deal  yahoo.com 28 Jul 10 The Monaco Grand Prix will remain on the F1 schedule for at least the next ten years after the signing of a new contract to keep the race on the calendar. Commercial rights holder Bernie Ecclestone revealed earlier this month that the future of the event wasn’t as secure as many believed. Indeed, Ecclestone was quoted in the Independent earlier this month as suggesting that 'we can do without Monaco' as they 'don’t pay enough'. However, despite a number of other nations waiting in the wings, Ecclestone has now agreed a new deal with the Automobile Club de Monaco to run for ten years from 2011 onwards. The date of the 2011 race has also been confirmed as 29 May. Eurosport.

Nuns on the Run

Riviera nuns on the run in Menton  lefigaro.fr 23 Jul 10 Two nuns in their 80s from Roquebrune-Cap-Martin sought refuge in Menton after refusing to obey their superior who asked them to join a home for elderly sisters in the Ardèche. Sister Saint-Denis, 81, and sister Marie Daniele, 86, disappeared from the villa de l’eau July 12 before members of the congregation arrived to help them pack. "When the sisters arrived, they went underground. They were given shelter with friends," said Odile Tallent, niece of Sister Marie-Danièle. The two sisters, with their superior Sister Marie-Maurice aged 89 years, were the last representatives of the small community of St. Joseph located in Roquebrune since the 1960s. AFP.

Ryan Wilson and Jamaica's Dwight Thomas followed him home.

Monaco confirms 'negotiations' with Ecclestone  motor sport.com 22 Jul 10 The Automobile Club de Monaco has confirmed it is in "negotiations" with Bernie Ecclestone. The F1 chief executive said recently that Formula One could "do without Monaco", moving former driver Patrick Tambay to surmise that it is a strategy to have the famous race's fees "revised upwards". The Club reacted on Thursday by saying it is reluctant to comment on the reports because it is unaware of their "context". "The reality is simple," a statement added. "Negotiations are underway between l'Automobile Club de Monaco and Formula One Management." The Club added that it will make an announcement if an agreement is reached. GMM.

Monaco could be axed from calendar for 2011  thef1times.com 18 Jul 10 Monaco is facing being axed from the F1 calendar as early as 2011 according to Formula One Management boss, Bernie Ecclestone. With 19 races on the 2010 calendar and India and Texas looking to join for 2011, space has to be made to allow Ecclestone to meet the 20-race cap that himself and the teams have verbally agreed. Looking at ways to meet the cap, the 78-year old Bilionaire said, "I think we can do without Monaco, they don't pay enough." The Principality has been on the F1 calendar since 1955 and is the only race that doesn't pay a hosting fee. "The Europeans are going to have to pay more money or we will have to go somewhere else," Ecclestone concluded.
