Local
scuba divers volunteered Sat 18 Jul 09 to clean up the sea bed off
of Saint Jean Cap Ferrat in what has become an annual event
organised by local association
SOS
Grand Bleu
to raise awareness about the importance of protecting the local
marine environment. Land locked volunteers meanwhile helped to
clean up the beach. Local diver David Rowe was one of the
volunteers and he sent us this report. Click on the pictures to
view the report. SOS
Grand Bleu is an association based in Saint Jean Cap Ferrat
that aims to protect the flora and fauna of the
Mediterranean. Their latest campaign is to protect the
endangered Bluefin tuna from over fishing.
France
to claim exclusive Mediterranean fishing zone
Yahoo! 24
Aug 09 France
says it intends to assert sovereign rights over marine resources
off its Mediterranean coast, declaring a 70-mile Exclusive
Economic Zone in a bid to protect dwindling fish
stocks. French Environment Minister Jean-Louis
Borloo made the announcement during a trip to southern
France, saying he hoped that other Mediterranean nations
would follow suit to prevent overfishing by fleets from outside
the region. AFP.

In Monaco, Prince Albert II has asked restaurants not to serve red
tuna, saying over-fishing has made them an endangered species. Local
marine experts say local fishing of red tuna can continue once
stocks replenish but French authorities say international fishing
should not be allowed to dominate the Mediterranean – 90 per cent of
red tuna fished here and in the Atlantic is exported to Japan.
French
fishermen hit back at stars' bid to save bluefin tuna
The
Observer 28 Jun 09
It has been a long few weeks for captain Jean-Louis Donnarel
and the crew of the Provence-Côte d'Azur II. Donnarel and
his crew are at the sharp end of an increasingly bitter row:
one that links globally known restaurants, top celebrities,
huge international conglomerates, sushi shops and
supermarkets across half the world to the livelihoods of a
few thousand fishermen. Jason

SOS
Grand Bleu's name was inspired by Luc Besson's movie
Le
Grand Bleu
(The Big
Blue). Released in 1988 it has
achieved cult status and was the most succesful French movie
released in the 80s.
It features
the competition between two divers and is appreciated for
its magnificent cinematography by Carlo Varini and haunting
soundtrack by Eric Serra. Some dolphin scenes were shot
locally at Marineland in Antibes.
Based on a real life story
of two competing divers who have known each other since
childhood, the two rivals are played by Jean-Marc Barr and
Jean Reno. Rosanna Arquette plays the love interest who is
fixated with Barr's character who seems to be more dolphin
than man.
The 39m Motor Yacht Pari
ran aground on the 'Rompa Talon' rocks off of Cap Ferrat in the early
hours of Saturday 30 May 09 in strong winds and rough seas. A dramatic
helicopter rescue took 5 crew and two guests off of the boat whilst the
captain remained on board. Pari was eventually refloated in a delicate
operation 27 Jun 09 and towed around Cap Ferrat to Villefranche pending
further inspection and repairs. We have all the news and a video clip.
