Last October in Toronto, Monaco
based sculptor
Blake
staged an art happening to demonstrate the power of performance
art to bring oppression closer to public consciousness.
A Buddha sculpture by Blake was set on
fire, echoing the self-immolation by a Buddhist monk
in South Vietnam in 1963 to protest the persecution of
Buddhists. A beautiful film was made of the event, and now Blake
has dedicated the film to the protestors struggling for freedom
in North Africa and the Middle East. These revolutions were
sparked off in Tunisia following the self-immolation by fire of
street vendor
Mohamed Bouazizi to whom this
moving film has been dedicated. The Toronto event was organised
by
Kehrig Fine Art. Mark
Dezzani. |
